One Family’s Journey Navigating Autism and Access

by Guadalupe Bright, Parent Advocate

Our boys have both been diagnosed with Autism Level 3, a diagnosis that brings with it not only unique needs but also a constant battle to access the services they deserve. From the moment we began seeking support, we’ve encountered overwhelming barriers—waitlists that stretch for months, and limited availability of specialized care. When a spot in a program finally opens, we feel "forced" to take it—no matter how inconvenient the timing—because turning it down could mean waiting months more for another opportunity.

Finding child care has been one of the hardest challenges. With our oldest son, we contacted countless child care centers, only to be met with rejection after rejection. Many told us directly they could not accommodate him because of his disability. We weren’t looking for perfection—just a center that would see and support him for who he is. Instead, we were left with no options we considered safe or appropriate.

The lack of access to timely health care services and the inability to find quality child care has made it nearly impossible for me to work a traditional job.

I rely on a flexible position that brings in a very limited income. This means our family is forced to survive mostly on one income while trying to juggle therapies, appointments, and care for both boys.

We are doing everything we can, but the system is not built to support families like ours. We’re not asking for special treatment—just a chance for our boys to thrive.
