Only one of the original Democrats running for governor will still be in the race after Wednesday.

Connie Pillich will announce that she is ending her bid to seek the Democratic nomination for Ohio governor, a person familiar with Pillich’s campaign said Tuesday.

32 Candidates File To Run For Statewide Office

A full slate of hopefuls beat Wednesday's deadline to file bids for Ohio's statewide offices, including 11 who are vying for the governor's post, Secretary of State Jon Husted reported.


Pending certification, all of the main frontrunners for governor who have been campaigning for weeks will be on the ballot, along with a couple newcomers to the field. Among those is Rocky River Democrat Jonathan Heavey, who wrote his campaign a $1.5 million check to start off.

What surprises await on today’s filing deadline for statewide candidates?

A few surprises may be in store at today’s deadline for candidates to file for statewide office.


For instance, two more Democrats apparently are joining the race for Ohio governor, bringing the total to seven. And four announced candidates for the state’s top office have yet to actually file — including Republican Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor and Democrats Connie Pillich and Joe Schiavoni, although all say they will.

Dennis Kucinich chooses Akron city councilwoman as running mate (The Plain Dealer)

AKRON, Ohio - Two days after making his gubernatorial run official, former U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a Democrat, chose Akron City Councilwoman Tara Samples as his running mate.

Kucinich introduced Samples at the Burning Bush Church in downtown Akron. Echoing Kucinich's gubernatorial announcement from earlier this week, Samples said it was time for the people to "take back" Columbus.
